thyssenkrupp globally leading in climate protection
For the fifth year running, thyssenkrupp has been named as a global leader in climate protection by the international not-for-profit organization CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project). CDP recognized the thyssenkrupp group for its actions to cut emissions, reduce climate impacts and help build a low-carbon economy. thyssenkrupp is one of 269 international companies on CDP’s 2020 climate change “A List”, which includes 16 companies from Germany.
Over 5,800 companies worldwide took part in the assessment in which their environmental performance was scored from A to D-. CDP carries out its annual assessment among other things on behalf of over 515 investors with assets of more than 106 trillion US dollars.
Climate protection information is becoming increasingly important for investors. Demand for sustainable investment opportunities currently outstrips supply many times over. For several years now, global asset managers have recognized climate change as one of the three biggest global risks. CDP holds the world’s largest collection of corporate climate data.

Under its climate strategy, thyssenkrupp aims to be climate-neutral by 2050. As early as 2030 the group plans to cut emissions from production and outsourced energy by around 30 percent and emissions from the use of thyssenkrupp products by 16 percent.
One central process thyssenkrupp wants to decarbonize is steel production. As a first step, the company plans to replace some of the carbon used in one of its blast furnaces with hydrogen. Later “green” hydrogen, produced with the help of water electrolysis using exclusively renewable energies, will be used in new direct reduction plants.
Significant carbon dioxide reductions can also be achieved with Carbon2Chem technology, which uses hydrogen to convert industrial CO2 emissions into valuable base chemicals. The technology is suitable for use in steel production and also for example in the cement and chemical industries and waste incineration.
thyssenkrupp has systematically expanded its capacities for green hydrogen production systems and can now manufacture water electrolysis cells with a total rating of up to one gigawatt per year. Along the way to becoming a leader in hydrogen production, storage and utilization, thyssenkrupp has acquired around 500 associated patents.
